La bibliothèque du Beagle

Durant le Second Voyage du Beagle, la cabine de Darwin correspondait à la salle des cartes de la dunette. La bibliothèque de bord s'y trouvait également, dans des casiers à livres disposés sur un demi-périmètre de cloison. M. Stebbing, civil recruté par le Capitaine pour réparer les instruments de précision, était aussi en charge de la consigne de prêt de la bibliothèque. L'officier Stokes conserva après le voyage la copie de ces consignes de prêt. Ce document servit de référence aux rédacteurs du premier volume de la Correspondance complète de Darwin pour retranscrire le catalogue de cette bibliothèque embarquée à bord du Beagle.

Règlement interne de la Bibliothèque du HMS Beagle (d'après le document conservé par M. Stokes) :

Les livres de la Cabine de la Dunette sont à la Disposition de tous les Officiers du Beagle qui se conformeront aux règles suivantes :

1. Les livres doivent être pris et remis à leur place par la Personne désignée à cet effet.
2. Chaque Livre, qu'il soit Ancien ou Récent, Relié ou Non Relié, doit être couvert, temporairement, par la personne qui l'utilise.
3. Les Livres ne doivent pas [être] transmis d'un Officier à un autre à l'insu de la personne qui en a la charge.
4. Deux Catalogues seront tenus, l'un pour un usage général, l'autre pour la Cabine.
5. Les noms de ceux qui empruntent des Livres doivent être inscrits sur une liste tenue à cet Effet.
6. Tous les Officiers qui possèdent des livres qu'ils estiment d'utilité générale et dont ils n'ont pas déjà de Doubles dans le Catalogue œuvreront dans l'intérêt de tous en les prêtant semblablement, en insérant leurs titres dans le Catalogue et, si cela est plus commode, en les entreposant dans la Cabine de la Dunette.
7. Les Livres doivent être empruntés, ou restitués, le matin avant 8 h 1/2.
8. Les Livres ne doivent en aucun cas être transportés hors du Navire.
